Announcing issue 2 of Inscription: the Journal of Material Text – Theory, Practice, History

Inscription combines imaginative thinking and critical rigour to take the study of material texts in new directions. Inscription’s focus is not just on the meanings and uses of the codex book, but also the nature of writing surfaces (papery or otherwise), and the processes of mark-marking in the widest possible sense: from hand-press printing to vapour trails in the sky; from engraved stones to digital text.

Issue 2 is all about ‘holes’, and includes papers by Deirdre Lynch and Craig Robertson, Heather Wolfe, James Misson, Louis Lüthi, Paul Reynolds, Aleksandra Kaminska and Juliette De Maeyer, Galina Oustnova-Stjepanovic, and Michael Marcinkowski.

Issue 2 also features artwork by Fiona Banner, Erica Baum, David Bellingham, Christian Bök, Dianna Frid, Kendell Geers, Miranda July, Carla Nappi, Harold Offeh and Carolyn Thompson.

The launch of the second issue of the journal accompanies a related exhibition at No Show Space, ‘Holy, Holy, Holy: an exhibition of books with holes’ that runs from Wednesday 6th October to Saturday 30th October.

Inscription Journal is edited by Simon Morris, Gill Partington & Adam Smyth and published by Information as Material (iam), York in partnership with Leeds Beckett University.
